What is RAFT?

RAFT is the World's leading computer program for yield line analysis and ultimate strength design of reinforced stiffened concrete slabs supported on moisture reactive soil, as commonly applied in residential construction. It was specifically developed for engineers wanting a practical alternative to the prescriptive approach adopted in Australian Standard AS-2870. The program is suitable for novices as well as power-users.

How does the program work?

The first phase of the RAFT program is to calculate the structural performance of the slab as a function of soil surface movement, covering both heave and subsidence. A typical asymptotic "S-curve" performance graph is depicted below. The next phase of the program is to interpolate the performance graph to determine the ultimate bending moment to resist failure at design surface movements applicable to the building site.
The final phase of the program is to calculate the following design details:
Overall stiffened section depth, slab thickness, minimum number of stiffening ribs in both directions, stiffening rib width, amount of top and bottom steel reinforcement, and other details, in accordance with AS-2870.
